We analyze acousto-optic interactions for the case when a divergent diffracted optical beam propagates along one of the optic axes in biaxial crystals. We demonstrate that the diffracted beam reveals a specific spatial distribution of polarization states and transfers an optical vector-vortex field. It can be referred to as an optical vector-vortex beam with inseparable polarization and spatial states. At least intra-system entanglement occurs between different degrees of freedom, which are represented by the spin and orbit angular momentums in our case. The spatial orientation of the beam can be controlled while changing the angle between the optic axes. This is achieved by tuning the wavelength of optical radiation and the acoustic wave frequency. We have performed basic calculations using a particular example of optically biaxial triglycine sulfate crystals and assuming that the initial acoustic wave frequency amounts to 50 MHz and the light wavelength changes from 400 to 675 nm. Then the resulting acoustic frequency can increase up to 133 MHz for the longitudinal acoustic mode and 93 MHz or 89 MHz for the two transverse modes. In other words, one can build a generator of optical vortices and operate their spatial orientation, using triglycine sulfate.

In the present work, we analyze acousto-optic (AO) interactions under the condition when a diffracted optical wave propagates along one of the optic axes in optically biaxial crystals. We find that the number of AO interaction types is reduced from nine, which is typical for the most general case, to six, since some of the isotropic and anisotropic diffraction types manifest themselves simultaneously. We reveal that, in the case of the interactions of quasi-ordinary and quasi-extraordinary optical waves, the dependences of effective elasto-optic coefficients and AO figure of merit on the tracing angle of an incident optical beam around the optic axis are symmetric with respect to the plane that is perpendicular to the plane of optic axes and contains the principal axis Z . We determine the geometry of AO interactions at which the highest AO figure of merit can be expected. Finally, we show that, in the case of propagation of diffracted light along one of the optic axes in the biaxial Tl 3 AsS 4 crystals, the highest AO figures of merit, M 2 = 1290 × 10 − 15 s 3 / kg and M 2 = 1305 × 10 − 15 s 3 / kg , can be reached when the quasi-longitudinal acoustic wave interacts with the quasi-ordinary or quasi-extraordinary optical waves in the plane of optic axes.

Modern applications of acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs) range from hyperspectral imaging in space research and biomedical optics to optical manipulation and ultrafast laser pulse shaping. The design of all AOTFs is based on optical anisotropy of crystals; until now, however, only uniaxial crystals have been used. Lower symmetry and outstanding acousto-optic (AO) properties of some new biaxial crystals make them promising candidates for qualitative improvements in this field. Anisotropic AO interaction in crystals allows angular noncritical phase-matching (NPM) configurations that are commonly used in different AOTF types. In this work, we perform a comprehensive geometrical and topological analysis of 2D transfer functions of AO interaction under NPM condition in biaxial crystals. The topological classification of the 2D transfer functions under an angular NPM condition is proposed. In principle, in the planes of a biaxial, the same types of transfer function exist as in uniaxial crystals, including cross-like topology of collinear diffraction, circular topology, and ultrawide angle topology. In addition, new topological types of the AO 2D transfer function are reported, which exist only in biaxial crystals.
