“…33 In addition, as they get older, young people may become involved in more stable relationships where they come to trust their partner in a range of situations, and thus perceive less of a need to be concerned about STIs. 20 Most studies are also consistent in reporting more regular use of condoms by males than females 14,23,27,29,31,[33][34][35][36] and females, in turn, report a greater use of female contraceptives such as the contraceptive pill. 10,33,37 An underlying sense of invulnerability to STIs could play an influential contributory role in all of these associated factors.…”

“…Birth control pills and withdrawal are probably most frequently used by Chinese young people to prevent pregnancy, especially when condoms are not readily available to them. Fifth, similar to the explanations of Western researchers (e.g., Civic, 2000;Hammer, Fisher, Fitzgerald, & Fisher, 1996;Zimmerman et al, 2007), who argue that trust, romance, and love rather than sexually transmitted diseases are the focus in close relationships, Chinese college students do not believe that unprotected sex with boyfriends or girlfriends is a risky behavior. No matter what the reasons may be, interventions to increase condom use among Chinese young adults are urgently needed.…”
