College Campus Sexual Assault and Female Students With Disabilities

Abstract: College campus sexual assault is well-documented as a pervasive problem among U.S. colleges and universities, with female college students at the greatest risk. Although more than 30 years of research has been dedicated to uncovering college campus sexual assault and identifying risk factors for victimization, few studies have looked at the relationship between female students with disabilities and college campus sexual assault victimization. The present study uses data from the female respondents (N = 22,828)… Show more

“…There may also be high expectations on the part of businesses, especially regarding social competence and comprehension of business operations (Edmonds et al, 2021). Most students are accustomed to the informal and lenient educational environment, so making the requisite changes during work placements can be especially difficult for female students with disabilities (Campe, 2021).…”

“…Unfortunately, those with disabilities are disproportionately affected by sexual violence. Sexual assault in the United States is a growing issue (Campe, 2020) and is defined as a coercive sexual act, either attempted or completed, between a victim and perpetrator. These unwanted sexual acts can include physical interactions, such as grabbing, fondling, and penetration, or verbal threats (Morgan & Oudekerk, 2019).…”

“…These unwanted sexual acts can include physical interactions, such as grabbing, fondling, and penetration, or verbal threats (Morgan & Oudekerk, 2019). In the United States, there were 734,630 cases of sexual assault in 2018 (Morgan & Oudekerk, 2019), however, sexual assault has had more of an impact on college-aged women and female students with disabilities (Campe, 2020). One in five women have been sexually assaulted while in college (Krebs et al, 2007) and one study estimated that female students with disabilities constitute approximately 40% of college sexual assault cases (Campe, 2020).…”

“…The risk of sexual violence, a term we use to describe any form of unwanted sexual contact, is even higher for people who have marginalized identities, such as students who have one or more disabilities. Recent studies have found disproportionately high rates of sexual violence among college students with disabilities (Campe, 2021; Scherer et al, 2013), yet there is little research on how students with disabilities cope with the aftermath of sexual violence while at college, especially pertaining to their disclosure and help-seeking behavior. Much is known about disclosure and help seeking among college survivors in general (see Sabina & Ho, 2014 for review), but few studies have focused on college students with disabilities.…”
