“…A key feature to emerge from these studies of diverse species is the similarity in the patterns of expansion of the three NCr streams (reviewed by: Falck et al, 2002). Within each stream NCr cells show tight coherence as the population expands ventrally and rostrally, a process described as collective cell behavior (reviewed by: Carmona-Fontaine et al, 2008;Scarpa & Mayor, 2016;Theveneau & Mayor, 2012;Wynn, Rupp, Trainor, Schnell, & Kulesa, 2014). Establishing and maintaining these compact streams is facilitated through a complex set of interactions both among NCr cells (Barriga et al, 2018;Gunuth et al, 2018;Kulesa & Fraser, 2000;McKeown, Wallace, & Anderson, 2013) and with their neighbors.…”

“…For instance, during embryonic development, neural crest cells undergoing a partial or complete EMT can migrate as either a multicellular stream or individually, in order to reach distant tissues. Similarly, during gastrulation, both these modes of migration are observed at different spatiotemporal coordinates (Scarpa and Mayor, 2016). Typically, collective migration is associated with a partial EMT or hybrid E/M phenotype (Kuriyama et al, 2014;Sarioglu et al, 2015), whereas fully mesenchymal cells tend to migrate alone.…”

“…Recent works have shown that Rac is first activated in some epithelial cells of the free borders during the collective cell migration, which leads to Rac activation in the rest of the cells as well as to the formation of lamellipodia in free border cells and small cryptic lamellipodia in cells located in the center of the epithelial sheet (Lebreton & Casanova, 2014;Scarpa & Mayor, 2016). Therefore, the polarized distribution of CD cells expressing Rac1 within the colony following BK stimulation seems to correlate to the distribution of the active Rac form in epithelial cell sheets, described by the aforementioned authors.…”
