Collection season and auxin treatment in the propagation by cuttings of mandarin hybrids

Abstract: Propagation by cuttings is an alternative for obtaining citrus rootstocks. The exogenous application of indolebutyric acid (IBA), cutting collection season and genotypes used may affect the rooting and vegetative growth of citrus rootstocks cuttings. Two experiments were conducted to study the influence of these factors. In the first one, semi-hardwood cuttings from the 'Sunki' mandarin hybrids H49 and H77 were collected in the fall and late spring of 2013 and treated with IBA (0 mg L-1, 1,500 mg L-1 and 3,000… Show more

“…Similar results were found in a study by Rahdari et al (2014) that on treated stem cutting of Cordyline terminalis with increased NAA concentrations from 1000 to 2000 and 3000 ppm resulted in a decrease the number of branches/ leaf that could indicate that auxins in high concentrations could inhibit shoot and branch growth. According to Raj et al (2013) and Sarmiento et al (2016), a high auxin concentration stimulates the biosynthesis of ethylene, which further triggers the production of abscisic acid (ABA). The ABA together with ethylene, accelerates leaf senescence and ultimately death of leaf.…”

“…This follows identical trends of no active shoot growth in commercial citrus nursery greenhouses in Central Florida during the winter mid-November to mid-March period. Propagation of mandarins' cuttings was 100% in the late spring in Brazil, but only 23% for cuttings treated with 3000 ppm IBA in the fall in Brazil [16]. Research with night interruption found that 1 hour of 3:1 red:far-red lighting in the middle of the night induced bud break of rootstocks during the deep winter period [17].…”

“…Propagation by cuttings is an alternative method for the production of citrus rootstock seedlings, which are traditionally propagated through apomictic seeds (Souza & Schafer, 2018). This method is aimed at ensuring the production of clonal material, especially in varieties with a low rate of polyembryony, and possibly reducing the seedling development period (Oliveira et al, 2014;Sarmiento et al, 2016), particularly under subtropical conditions, characteristic of the southern region of Brazil. Additionally, cuttings can be an alternative in view of the lower availability of seeds on the market due to the occurrence of greening (Candidatus Liberibacter spp.…”
