Cultivating garlic after the rice season has been increasingly attractive for rice farmers in the Philippines especially in areas where rice production is constrained by water scarcity. In Mindoro, Philippines, garlic cultivars planted include 'Mindoro White' (MW), 'Lubang' (LB), 'Batanes White' (BW), and 'Ilocos White' (IW). This study provides an in-depth analysis of major local garlic cultivars for classification and for selection of those with improved adaptation and marketability. For classification, we focused on phenotypic stable traits. Among these traits analyzed, clove weight (p < 0.001) and number of bulb leaf sheaths (p < 0.05) were significantly different. While there were small differences in their clove number and bulb color, bulb circumference (p < 0.001) and weight (p < 0.01) were highly significant. BW has the largest bulb circumference (126.50 ± 1.88 mm) and weight (22.38 ± 0.94 g) while MW has the smallest (103.30 ± 1.57 mm) and is lightest (13.78 ± 0.50 g). Bivariate analysis revealed that the highest bulb circumference and weight values of MW population correspond to the lowest values of BW population suggesting that these cultivars are two distinct populations. This was further supported by classical clustering analysis that distinguished them by bulb circumference (87.12%), clove number (76.01%) and number of clove vascular structures (78.27%). Across cultivars, measurements of the epidermal and parenchymal cells significantly differed. Qualitative analysis of the bulb characteristics showed that BW exhibits a regular, multi-fan bulb structure with three layers of large cloves implying market attractiveness while IW's distinctly tight clove's skin indicates long storage potential.

A b s t r a c t. A field experiment was conducted in the years 2017-2018 in the area of the Didactic and Experimental Centre, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The experiment was set up in the randomised split block design, in three replicates. The first experimental factor was four winter cultivars of garlic (Allium sativum L.): 'Arkus', 'Harnaś', 'Mega', 'Ornak'. Within the scope of the second experimental factor, the effect of amino acid biostimulators Calleaf Aminovital and Maximus Amino Protect on the yield and quality of garlic was analysed. The control treatment comprised plots on which only water was applied. The objective of the study was to estimate selected morphological features of bulbs and the content of nutritional components of garlic cultivated with the use of biopreparations. The morphology and the nutritional composition of the edible part of garlic was estimated. Statistically significant impact of the cultivar on bulb mass and horizontal diameter and on the content of L-ascorbic acid and nitrates (V) in the edible part of garlic was demonstrated. Cultivar 'Ornak' was characterised by greater bulb mass (64.62 g), vertical and horizontal diameter (4.09 and 4.14 cm), dry matter content (38.0%) and concentration of reducing sugars (1.18 g 100 g -1 fresh matter). Lower bulb mass, height, content of total and reducing sugars and of nitrates (V) were determined in garlic cv. 'Arkus'. The cultivation of garlic plants with the use of the biostimulators had a significant effect on the number of cloves in a single bulb. The application of Calleaf Aminovital increased their number to an average of 6 cloves×plant -1 . Interaction of garlic plants cv. 'Arkus' with Calleaf Aminowital significantly reduced the content of nitrates (V) in garlic relative to the remaining cultivation treatments. This study investigates the factors influencing garlic producers’ market outlet selection decisions in Goncha Siso Enese District, Ethiopia. A total of 359 garlic producer households were polled, and the results were analyzed using a multivariate probit (MVP) model. According to the MVP model results, extension contact, access to market information, quantity of garlic sold, and farm experience in farming were negatively and significantly associated with the choice of consumer outlet. Besides this, the estimated MVP for retailer outlet choice is positively influenced by the amount of quantity sold, and farm experiences in garlic have a significant and positive effect on the choice of retailer outlets. In contrast, education level, access to credit, extension contact, and land area allocated for garlic have a negative influence on the choice of retail outlet. Moreover, wholesaler outlet choice is significantly and positively influenced by education level, access to credit, amount of quantity sold, extension contact, and distance to market, whereas it is negatively influenced by lagged price. Assembler outlet is also positively influenced by sex, distance to market, access to market information, and quantity sold, and negatively affected by extension contact and lag price. The implication is that, if smallholder garlic producers have access to alternative market outlets, they must select an appropriate combination of market outlets to maximize their income in the long run. It is suggested that equal access to marketing infrastructure in potential production areas, the garlic production system, and rural-urban development infrastructure should be improved and made more accessible.
