Collagen-induced Arthritis: A Model for Murine Autoimmune Arthritis

Abstract: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is a common autoimmune animal model used to study rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The development of CIA involves infiltration of macrophages and neutrophils into the joint, as well as T and B cell responses to type II collagen. In murine CIA, genetically susceptible mice (DBA/1J) are immunized with a type II bovine collagen emulsion in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), and receive a boost of type II bovine collagen in incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) 21 days after the first injec… Show more

“…The mice were divided into three groups: control (treated with saline), CIA, and CIA + HDL. The CIA and CIA + HDL groups were induced according to a previous report (10). On day 0, DBA/1 mice were immunized with bovine type II collagen in an emulsion with FCA.…”

“…The most widely used model for studying the complete disease process is the collagen-immunization model [51]. This model includes both the priming or initiation phase of the disease, which requires T- and B-cell responses leading to production of pathogenic anti-collagen and other antibodies, as well as the effector phases, which involve recruitment of neutrophils to the inflamed joint, leading to cellular activation with cartilage and bone injury.…”

“…CIA is induced in mice with articular bovine type II collagen (CII) and the resulting disease is essentially mediated by an autoimmune response. CIA is commonly used to study in vivo the pathological mechanisms of RA and to evaluate new antiarthritic drugs as it shares clinical, histological, and immunological features of human RA [9,10]. e sublingual administration is the mode of administration of MIM, including for the tested MIM.…”
