Dan Llywleyn Hall is a painter who spent three years walking and making paintings inspired by Offa’s Dyke. Born in Cardiff 1980, Dan now lives near the border in Llanfyllin where his studio is based. He has recently taken on the role of guest Editor of Borderlands – a revised Newsletter–cum–Journal that is published twice a year in behalf of the Offa’s Dyke Association. With a new introduction, the key components of the 2021 Walking with Offa project are reproduced here: nineteenth paintings and English-language versions of five of the original twelve poems. These are joined by three perspectives on the project by an artist (Baur), archaeological illustrator (Swogger) and archaeologist (Williams).

Often neglected and misunderstood, there are considerable challenges to digital and real-world public engagement with Britain’s third-longest linear monument, Wat’s Dyke (Williams 2020a). To foster public education and understanding regarding of Wat’s Dyke’s relationship to the broader story of Anglo-Welsh borderlands, but also to encourage the monument’s management and conservation, we proposed the creation of a comic heritage trail (Swogger and Williams 2020). Funded by the University of Chester and the Offa’s Dyke Association, we selected one prominent stretch where Wat’s Dyke is mainly damaged and fragmentary and yet also there remain well-preserved and monumental sections. Around Wrexham, Wat’s Dyke navigates varied topographies including following and crossing river valleys, and it is accessible to the public in the vicinity of North Wales’s largest town. In this article we outline the dialogue and decision-making process behind the map and 10-panel comic: What’s Wat’s Dyke? Wrexham Comic Heritage Trail (Swogger and Williams 2021; Williams and Swogger 2021a–b). In particular, we consider the stages taken to adapt from the initial plan of producing a bilingual map guide in response to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. This digital resource, published online in Welsh and English, guides visitors and locals alike along a central stretch of Wat’s Dyke around Wrexham town from Bryn Alyn hillfort to the north to Middle Sontley to the south. The comic heritage trail thus responds to the highly fragmented nature of the monument and utilises the linearity of Wat’s Dyke as a gateway to explore the complex Anglo-Welsh borderlands from prehistory to the present day. Building on earlier discussions (Swogger 2019), What’s Wat’s Dyke? illustrates the potential of future projects which use comics to explore linear monuments and linear heritage features (from ancient trackways and roads to railways and canals) constructed across the world from prehistory to recent times.

The Covid-19 pandemic has since 2019 caused worldwide socio-economic unrest, fear, and panic among all individuals, nations, races, and continents thereby forcing governments to introduce This necessitated the integration of predictive models into the healthcare support system for effective diagnostic and prediction of Covid-19. The need for modeling existing models to provide satisfactory models, give a clear understanding of the existing model contribution and further improve these models has become significantly necessary since the lack of confidence in predictive health systems would slow the early diagnostics and detection of Covid-19 in the smart health environment and in the world at large. This study is an adaptive study to experiment with existing models to ascertain and confirm the effectiveness of the model and further attempt to improve the performance of existing models to give healthcare system designers the edge to build and increase the effectiveness of Covid-19 predictive systems in a smart hospital environment. The study model 3 separate Arthurs conducted to produce a real-time intelligent Covid-19 predictive model using dataset from the Kaggle dataset repository, which can be implemented in smart hospitals to help eliminate physical contact treatment by healthcare professionals, prevent long queues which lead to long waiting at the healthcare facility. The experimental result confirms the efficacy of the models proposed by the authors and a further moderation to implement the stacking ensemble classifier techniques outperformed the modeling studies by producing an accuracy result of 96.00% and scoring an error rate of 0.040 representing 4%, having 1% higher than previous studies which used random forest with an accuracy of 95%. The study, therefore, confirms and recommends the models by the previous Arthurs as effective predictive models for diagnosing and predicting COVID-19 in a smart hospital environment.
