Summary Agile methods are increasingly introduced in automotive companies in the attempt to become more efficient and flexible in the system development. The adoption of agile practices influences communication between stakeholders and makes companies rethink the management of artifacts and documentation like requirements, safety compliance documents, and architecture models. Practitioners aim to reduce irrelevant documentation but face a lack of guidance to determine what artifacts are needed and how they should be managed. This paper presents artifacts, challenges, guidelines, and practices for the continuous management of systems engineering artifacts in automotive based on a theoretical and empirical understanding of the topic. In collaboration with 53 practitioners from six automotive companies, we conducted a design‐science study involving interviews, a questionnaire, focus groups, and practical data analysis of a systems engineering tool. The guidelines suggest the distinction between artifacts that are shared among different actors in a company (boundary objects) and those that are used within a team (locally relevant artifacts). We propose an analysis approach to identify boundary objects and three practices to manage systems engineering artifacts in industry.

Traceability for some people, is merely a tool to keep a history over something important that happened in the past. For others, is has no added value to their actual processes or products. In fact, it is becoming more and more valued. Traceability is still a vast area of research and an undiscovered field that if it is well used and managed, can provide a set of critical information or lead to something bigger. Many researches are still working to enhance its use and its integration by providing solutions to help users better manage and control their different elements (products, source code, documents, requirements, specifications, etc.)

Traceability Management plays a key role in tracing the artefacts associated with every requirement during the life cycle of a software project. However, the trace links between artefacts are not updated as the system evolves during the maintenance phase. This often leads to untrustworthy documentation and information gets scattered across a pile of untraceable documents that were created for various change management tasks. The goal of our research is on identifying an approach to trace requirements evolution across change requests and establish trace links between artifacts for such evolving requirements in the software maintenance phase. We have implemented a prototype Traceability Visualization Tool -VTrace for tracing requirements evolution. This tool also supports the visualization of trace links for evolving requirements. The effectiveness of the tool on change management tasks was tested using a controlled experiment. The results of our controlled experiment show that subjects who used the tool were 21% more accurate on change management tasks than subjects that didn't use the tool. This study provides us with the evidence that tracing the evolution of software artefacts is highly significant for better system maintenance by novice engineers.
