Collaborative modeling with semantic MediaWiki

Abstract: Modeling is an important aspect of information system development, allowing for abstract descriptions of systems and processes. Therefore, models are often characterized as communication artifacts between different stakeholders in a development process. However, modeling as such has turned out to be a specialist activity, requiring skills in arcane modeling languages and complex tools. In this paper, we suggest and present an approach for collaborative, Wiki-based modeling of process models and UML (class-)diag… Show more

“…Inline queries can be used to show relevant information on wiki pages dynamically. For instance, all relevant information in SMW about one process can be displayed on a dynamic created summary page [25]. The effort for each user is also lower, because the ideas can be developed collaboratively.…”

“…In addition to that semantic wikis enable large-scale and inter-departmental collaboration on knowledge structures. Such features of semantic wikis have been extended to support process development [3] and workflows [2]. Our approach to knowledge process visualization builds upon our work on dynamic knowledge process representation projects [8].…”

“…In this our contribution is the development of the lightweight knowledge process representation for engineering design that is essentially a micro-ontology [5]. The other contribution is in process visualization -the enhancement of the existing Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) process development approach [3] for visualizing and discussing knowledge processes.…”

“…Workflow Modeling [8], [13] [10], [11], [12] Workflow Execution [8] interests, indirectly suggested by the fact that people acted on the same artefact in the context of the same process instance. In a similar vein, [10] focused on integrating wiki-based communities with process-oriented knowledge structures.…”

“…Instead, most of the other proposals focused on collaborative process descriptions. Therefore, in [11] an extension of the Semantic Media Wiki was suggested to facilitate the sharing of values and the reconciliation of different terminologies during process modeling. However, the authors did not focus on visualization aspects.…”
