Collaborative Modeling for Decision Support in Water Resources: Principles and Best Practices

Abstract: Collaborative Modeling for Decision Support integrates collaborative modeling with participatory processes to inform natural resources decisions. Practitioners and advocates claim that the approach will lead to better water management, balancing interests more effectively and reducing the likelihood of costly legal delays. These claims are easy to make, but the benefits will only be realized if the process is conducted effectively. To provide guidance for how to conduct an effective collaborative modeling proc… Show more

“…Between 2000 and 2006, an extensive study was undertaken to combine scientific knowledge, modelling, and a plurality of viewpoints in the development of a new regulation plan. The Study Board assembled numerous public interest and technical committees to model the lake and river systems and a Shared Vision Planning approach was implemented to steer and integrate the results [15,17].…”

“…While objectively documented outcomes and impacts of collaborative modeling remain few in number, limited evidence suggests this research design has the potential to improve access to climate science research and subsequent adaptation at the river system and community scale [24,48,49]. Criteria to assess research outcomes include improvements in communication, networking, and relationships, and acknowledgement that as a result of the research, an expanded set of solutions emerge to help local stakeholders address climate induced resource challenges [22].…”

“…These approaches are characterized by thoughtfully planned and implemented group procedure, which includes facilitated discussion, deliberation, and problem solving [21,24]. Effective participatory research approaches prioritize mutually beneficial knowledge exchange between scientists and local stakeholders.…”

“…Briefly, this project relies on iterative interaction with 12 water managers, each representing large numbers of individual water users that comprise the primary and diverse water uses geographically distributed from the headwaters to the system terminus [45,47,51,73]. Figure 2 illustrates the research design, including the location on the river system of the 12 water management organizations.…”
