IntroductionThis study aims to investigate the impact of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) course on cognitive skills (i.e., Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, Logical Reasoning, Creativity, and Decision-Making) in the context of solving geometric construction problems.MethodsThe research utilized a quasi-experimental design involving a control group and an experimental group to assess the effects of the PBL intervention. Cognitive skills were measured using a custom-designed questionnaire. Additionally, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed in a subsequent phase to scrutinize the causal interrelationships among these cognitive skills.ResultsIn the initial phase, the findings revealed that the PBL intervention had a statistically significant positive impact on problem-solving and creativity skills. However, the effects on critical thinking, logical reasoning, and decision-making skills did not reach statistical significance. In the subsequent phase employing SEM, the analysis demonstrated significant positive relationships, particularly between critical thinking and problem-solving, critical thinking and logical reasoning, logical reasoning and problem-solving, and logical reasoning and creativity. Notably, creativity also exhibited a significant positive effect on problem-solving.DiscussionThis study underscores the nuanced impact of PBL on different cognitive skills, with clear enhancements observed in problem-solving and creativity. However, the study suggests that the effects may not be uniform across all cognitive skills. These findings offer valuable insights for educators and curriculum designers, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches when integrating PBL to foster cognitive skill development.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of guided inquiry activities supported by digital stories in the 6th grade science lesson on students’ attitudes towards inquiry. The method of the study was determined as the embedded design, one of the mixed method research designs. 27 students from a public school located in the countryside participated in the study. In the quantitative dimension of the study, a single group pretest-posttest research design was used. Quantitative data were obtained through the Attitude Scale towards Research-Questioning. The qualitative dimension of the study was designed in accordance with the case study model. Qualitative data were obtained by using semi-structured weekly focus group interviews, teacher diaries and observation form. Quantitative data were analyzed with Mann Whitney U-Test, qualitative data were analyzed with descriptive and content analysis methods. As a result, thanks to the applied method, the attitude scores of the lower and middle group students towards inquiry converged to each other. Interviews with students and researcher diaries also support the results. It was revealed how the learning environment, teacher, student and lecturing affect the attitudes of the students participating in the studies towards inquiry

The aim of the study is to examine Problem Based Learning (PBL) studies in terms of descriptive and semantic content analysis by using topic modeling. For this purpose, descriptive and topic modeling analyzes were used together in the research. In order to include the highest number of articles on Scopus, the term "problem based learning" was searched in the title, abstract and keywords and only journal articles (research and review) were selected. Thus, 7289 articles in 1987-2021 were included in the study. Firstly, the subject area, author and country distributions are listed. In addition, it showed that the most studied topics were education curriculum (39.15%), teaching strategies (14.90%), critical thinking skill (12.29%) and patient simulation (8.88%). When examined in seven five-year periods between 1987 and 2021, it was determined that the most voluminous topic was education curriculum, and the most accelerated topic was clinical education. Considering the number of publications in five-year periods, it was determined that the topics of critical thinking skills and teaching strategies accelerated more in the percentages calculated according to the topics. It is expected that the results obtained will be important reference points for the studies to be carried out in the field of PBL
