Changes such as expiring patents and shifting environments challenge a firm trying to reach long-lasting appropriation success of an innovation. To understand how appropriation can be continued over time, this study investigates and compares Bayer’s two innovations, Aspirin medicine and Roundup herbicide. Whereas for the first, appropriation success has been continued through decades, for the latter, such a continuum has not realised. Our findings suggest that long-lasting appropriation success lies in adjusting the appropriation strategy by identifying the most substantial appropriability premises for innovation (appropriability mechanisms and complementary assets) and the ways to use them in different situations, paying specific attention to the shifting appropriability conditions. For long-term success, it is critical for firms to recognise that isolating appropriability mechanisms and complementary assets can have varied and distinctive implications depending on the pertinent contextual factors at innovation level and to strategise accordingly.

EinführungIn den letzten 15 Jahren wird zunehmend beklagt, dass die Zahl der neu zugelassenen Arzneistoffe tendenziell abnimmt und gleichzeitig die Entwicklungskosten deutlich steigen. Jüngste Daten aus 2012 lassen zwar hoffen, von einer Trendumkehr zu sprechen, wäre jedoch verfrüht.[ [4] Diese bilden die Grundlage für Abbildung 1, die die Zeit und Kosten sowie Erfolgswahrscheinlichkeit zusammenfasst.Die zugrundeliegende Arbeit von DiMasi [4] basiert auf 68 Neuentwicklungen und kommt auf Entwicklungskosten in Hçhe von 802 Millionen US-Dollar (MUSD). Genau betrachtet, betragen die "eigentlichen" Ausgaben nur 403 MUSD (ex pocket expenses), der "Rest" sind Kapitalkosten (costs of capital; CoC).Entgegen der allgemeinen Meinung, dass nur die späten klinischen Kosten maßgeblich für die hohen Gesamtkosten sind, tragen frühe Phasen wie die Leitstruktur-Optimierung ganz wesentlich als Kostentreiber bei. Dies wird klar, wenn man die Kosten der gescheiterten Kandidaten (failed compounds) in die Betrachtung mit einbezieht. Hierzu liefert Milne [5] interessante Einblicke (Abbildung 2). Leider sind auch diese Zahlen von 2003 und damit relativ alt. Als Anhaltspunkt sind sie aber sicher geeignet.Ein weiterer interessanter Aspekt ist die hohe Heterogenität der Entwicklungsprojekte. Kosten und Risiken variieren stark in Abhängigkeit von der Indikation, für die der jeweilige Arzneistoff entwickelt wird, und, interessanterweise, auch stark von Firma zu Firma. Die Innovationskraft kleiner Firmen scheint deutlich hçher zu sein. So stammen in den USA bereits 60 % aller neuen Arzneistoffe nicht aus der eigenen Pipeline von Big Pharma.[6] Sicher spielen bei diesen
