Collaborative Forum: An Affective Space for Infant–toddler Educators’ Collective Reflections

Abstract: A GROWING INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT to improve the quality of education and care for infants and toddlers is prevalent in the current research agenda. However, recent research on infant-toddler education is yet to provide a holistic view of the specialised practices for this age group. Drawing upon Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory, a holistic view is used to investigate collective reflection in order to transform educators' professional practices. “…Visual narrative methodology enables researchers to capture rich, complex data about the social and physical environments of the participants and their interactions with others within these environments. Opportunities to view, reflect on and create a commentary of recorded events and interactions support the development of an interpretative narrative (Brownlee & Berthelson, 2006; Quiñones, Li & Ridgway, 2018; Ridgway, Li & Quiñones, 2016). This methodology is useful for the investigation of professional practice, offering the opportunity researchers and participants to reflect on and articulate the judgements and decision-making made by professionals in their practice, based on knowledge and experience, not articulated in the moment where the focus is on ‘doing’ (Beijaard et al, 2004; Casey, 2014; Meierdirk, 2016; Osgood, 2006).…”

“…The overall research study followed a qualitative visual research methodology and was oriented towards examining infant–toddlers understandings of professional practices through the process of critical reflection (Quiñones et al, 2018). The Monash University Ethics Committee (CF14/2789-2014001523) granted full ethics approval as well as the Department of Education, and Training (Project ID: 2014_002500).…”

“…The three Collaborative Forums held at the university were video recorded, providing 17 hours of video data (first and second forums 6 hours and third forum 5 hours), and later transcribed. The Collaborative Forums were a professional and pleasant space for engagement and expansion of awareness of pedagogical practices (Quiñones, et al, 2018).…”

“…Raising consciousness in this space could not only create transformative change in the care and education practices for our youngest children, but also on the esteem and professional opportunities provided to birth to three educators. Through growing educators’ awareness in being ‘agents of change’, more meaningful opportunities can in turn be created for infants’ and toddlers’ participation and learning (Quiñones et al, 2018).…”
