Collaborative co-design of emerging multi-technologies for surgery

Abstract: The EU Research Training Network on Augmented Reality in Surgery (ARIS*ER) was established with two aims: (1) to develop next-generation novel image guidance (augmented reality based on medical images) and cross-linked robotic systems (automatic control loops guided by information sensed from the patient) and (2) to educate young researchers in the user-centred, multidisciplinary design of emerging technologies for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and intervention radiology. Collaborations between engineers, H… Show more

“…Developing a system with the defined aims and properties is therefore a challenging exercise. Specifically for such a condition, the method collaborative co-design for emerging multi-(ICT) technologies in medicine was developed (for surgery) in an international consortium with eight partners: academics, hospitals and industries, Freudenthal et al (2011). Small teams developed various emerging technologies, and the components of several teams were combined in integrated prototypes and iteratively tested with users.…”

“…The construction of the SINERGIA laparoscopic Virtual Reality simulator is one of the best documented examples of the development process (Lamata, 2006a), and this section highlights its main aspects. For a more detailed and thorough description of the design and development process of surgical systems the reader is referred to (Freudenthal et al, 2010).…”

“…The medical device industry requires multi-disciplinary collaboration between researchers and physicians (Freudenthal et al 2011). In responding to the challenges associated with medical device development, Ogrodnick (2013) proposed a collaborative model in which design teams have a/synchronous access to a repository of information regarding the progress of the development of a medical device.…”
