Collaborative action research: facilitating inclusion in schools

Abstract: This paper explores the ways in which collaborative action research can facilitate the development of inclusive practices and thinking in schools. The paper uses examples from a study that involved three countries and eight secondary schools to illustrate how the process of collaborative action research promoted inclusive thinking and practices. The study combined a well-established approach of professional development -lesson study -and a framework for engaging with the views of students. This led to a distinc… Show more

“…In addition, the process consists of multiple cycles at different levels (for example the three phases of the project, the process within each school, and the process around the challenge in each classroom or child) and interlinking with each other (see Figure 3 for an overview of the project phases). Messiou (2019) argues that what is distinctive in collaborative action research is the coming together of different stakeholders (as in this case occupational therapists and teachers) who take on the role of co-researchers and collaborate to understand a social process.…”

“…In addition, the experience and strategy to publish scientific papers needed in this research were met by another colleague who had research methods qualifications and had published many international publications in reputable journals. Studies that employ collaborative action research processes in education involve collaboration between teachers, or between teachers and researchers [37], [38]. Together, we designed the requirements for the research, such as a solution-based learning plan; developed digital technology literacy indicators for academic writing; and determine what students must master at the end of the project.…”

“…We have seen, though, that time is found when teachers and senior leaders see the benefits of using such approaches. In addition, I have also discussed the issue of some students been given more opportunities compared to others (Messiou, 2018), such as when the students get the role of student researchers. Building on this realisation, the various schools involved in the second study having been involved in more than one round of research lessons, have offered opportunities to more students to take the leading role of researchers.…”
