Collaboration Analytics Need More Comprehensive Models and Methods: An Opinion Paper

Abstract: As technology advances, learning analytics is expanding to include students’ collaboration settings. Despite their increasing application in practice, some types of analytics might not fully capture the comprehensive educational contexts in which students’ collaboration takes place (e.g., when data is collected and processed without predefined models, which forces users to make conclusions without sufficient contextual information). Furthermore, existing definitions and perspectives on collaboration analytics … Show more

“…Because all loadings are positive, this component is most likely a combination of individual activity in the game‐based learning environment. The loadings reveal that PBL provided a useful framework for how in‐game actions can be meaningfully designed and interpreted to account for the contexts of learning and accounting for how individual students interact with different activities and tasks across time and with other students (Han et al., 2021; Zimmermann et al., 2007).…”

“…This is where collaborative problem-solving (ColPS; Graesser et al 2018 ) skills are of great value. ColPS has been defined in different ways (see Han et al 2021 ), but one common definition describes ColPS as “the capacity of an individual to effectively engage in a process whereby two or more agents attempt to solve a problem by sharing the understanding and effort required to come to a solution and pooling their knowledge, skills, and efforts to reach that solution” (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development; OECD 2017 ). In a sense, ColPS reflects the application of individual problem-solving skills in a group context ( Greiff 2012 ).…”
