Cold-water corals landed by bottom longline fisheries in the Azores (north-eastern Atlantic)

Abstract: The impact of bottom trawling on cold-water corals (CWC) has been thoroughly studied and shown to be long-lasting; however the effects of bottom longlining on CWC ecosystems have received little attention. The present paper identifies the principal CWC species landed by bottom longlining in Faial (Azores) from 150 to 600 m depth. Data were obtained from a survey of 297 landings during four months coupled with 16 interviews with fishermen. A distinction was made among corals brought on deck directly entangled i… Show more

“…arborescent, bottlebrush, lyriform, reticulate). A recent 4-month survey of the by-catch from commercial longline fishery based at Horta revealed that the most frequently landed taxa were Leiopathes spp., E. dabneyi and Dendrophyllia sp., all possessing three-dimensional branched shapes (Sampaio et al, 2012). In the same survey, solitary scleractinians were all collected as secondary bycatch.…”

“…Once removed, these colonial organisms will not return to their former structural and ecological significance within our lifetime. Disturbance and removal from bottom trawling is among the most significant threats to cold-water corals (Althaus et al 2009), and recent studies have demonstrated that other bottom-set fishing gears, such as longlines, can also significantly impact these communities in areas of intense fishing (Duran Muñoz et al 2011, Sampaio et al 2012 Probert et al 2007, Santos et al 2009). …”

“…The bycatch of bottom longline fisheries revealed that Leiopathes sp. are often damaged and captured during fisheries operations (Sampaio et al 2012), raising concerns on the extent of these impairments and their recovery potential.…”

“…Bottom-contact fishing is a known stressor to deep-sea coral habitats and the likely source of pre-spill injury at reference sites. Bottom longlines in particular are recognized as a threat to gorgonian octocorals (Sampaio et al 2012). Monofilament line occurred in and around gorgonian colonies, with significantly more line and more interactions observed at reference sites (Kruskal-Wallis, p \ 0.01; ESM Fig.…”
