Cold‐inflammaging: When a state of homeostatic‐imbalance associated with aging precedes the low‐grade pro‐inflammatory‐state (inflammaging): Meaning, evolution, inflammaging phenotypes

Abstract: The age‐related pro‐inflammatory state, discovered and called ‘inflammaging’ by Franceschi et al. (2000) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of age‐related chronic diseases. A substantial body of data established that inflammaging is accompanied by a ‘2‐fold to 4‐fold’ increase in plasma levels of pro‐inflammatory mediators in healthy elderly people, when compared to the healthy adult population. This review focuses on the pre‐inflammaging phase, here we reported as ‘cold‐inflammaging’, a state where p… Show more

“…199 Triggers of inflammaging Inflammaging develops from cold-inflammaging with a less than 2-fold increase of pro-inflammatory mediators in plasma, compared to healthy adults. 200 This slightly altered level is a positive response for maintaining homeostatic stability. However, during aging, the homeostasis imbalance arises and progresses, leading to increased cytokine response (2-to 4-fold increase) mediated by the chronic activated innate immune system.…”

“…Being different aspects of the same process, chronic systemic inflammation, increases in both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers can represent the burden of systemic atherosclerosis and be associated with its progression. Moreover, in our opinion, the established findings can be adequately described within the framework of the concepts of "Immunosenescence" and "Inflammaging" [33,34].…”

“…When defects originate from the decline of physiological function, such as during aging, the adaptive mechanism converts the perturbation into a stable rearranged tissue homeostasis. This chronic non-resolutive flawed innate immune response is referred to as “inflammaging” [ 158 ]. Inflammaging, defined as sterile low-grade inflammation is part of the natural process of body aging and cannot be completely separated from functional aging of the immune system which is called ‘immunosenescence’.…”
