Cold atmospheric pressure plasma: simple and efficient strategy for preparation of poly(2-oxazoline)-based coatings designed for biomedical applications

Abstract: Poly(2-oxazolines) (POx) are an attractive material of choice for biocompatible and bioactive coatings in medical applications. To prepare POx coatings, the plasma polymerization represents a fast and facile approach that is surface-independent. However, unfavorable factors of this method such as using the low-pressure regimes and noble gases, or poor control over the resulting surface chemistry limit its utilization. Here, we propose to overcome these drawbacks by using well-defined POxbased copolymers prepar… Show more

“…As a result of the DCSBD plasma discharge effect on the polymer film surfaces, new matte areas were visible in contrast to the originally glossy and smooth PVC polymer films. Since the KPR 20 plasma reactor device does not contain a movable element for holding samples as described in other scientific studies [41][42][43][44][45], it was possible, in combination with the long exposure, to discharge to create characteristic white areas on the PVC polymer film surface. The stated position of the micro-discharges and their movement through the ceramic dielectric according to electrode windings can also be found in the literature [38] and in Figure 2.…”

“…Atmospheric pressure plasma processing can be used to increase the hydrophilicity of the material and therefore encourage cell adhesion to the surface [ 177 ]. Using a piezobrush to achieve atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on a pure titanium surface increased cell adhesion, alkaline phosphatase activity, and factors related to bone differentiation [ 81 ], suggesting effectively enhancing osseointegration without altering the other beneficial titanium surface properties.…”

“…Thermal plasma is created by heating a gas to a temperature at which electrons are torn from atoms and ions are formed. It can reach a temperature of up to 10 6 K. NTP is generated by an electric discharge when the generated ions reach a temperature close to the environment (maximum 340 K), which predestines NTP for use in many applications [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. NTP is often referred to as nonequilibrium plasma because it is not in thermodynamic equilibrium.…”
