Cold Atmospheric Plasma Conveys Selectivity Against Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells via Triggering EGFR(Tyr1068)-Mediated Autophagy

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinomas remain as a global health threat given its high mortality rate. We have previously identified the selectivity of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) against multiple types of malignant tumors and proposed it as a promising onco-therapeutic strategy. Here, we investigated its roles in controlling hepatocellular carcinoma malignancy and one possible driving molecular mechanism. By focusing on post-translational modifications including acetylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination, we ident… Show more

“…Hence, p-JNK binds to the BIRC6 protein, which, under natural conditions, binds to LC3B, leading to its ubiquitination and degradation. When BIRC6 binds to p-JNK, the free LC3B protein can stimulate the initiation of autophagy [105].…”

“…IFNγ may synergize with CAP in suppressing SI spheroid growth via IFNγ/IFNGR2/APC/TCF/GPX4 signaling Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is an emerging oncotherapeutic approach for cancer treatment as well as many other diseases [25]. Its efficacy against malignant cells has been demonstrated in various malignant cells such as colorectal cancers [26], liver cancers [27], stomach cancers [28], pancreatic cancers [29], and has been shown capable of damaging cancer stem cells [30].…”

“…Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), composed of hydroxyl radical (OH·), singleton oxygen (O), superoxide (O 2- ), nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), ozone (O 3 ), and nitrite in the form of anion or proton (OONO - , ONOOH) ( 79 , 80 ), is a redox modulating tool and a promising onco-therapeutics with selectivity against malignant cells documented in various cancers such as melanomas ( 81 , 82 ), prostate cancers ( 83 ), breast tumors ( 80 , 84 ), bladder cancers ( 85 ), pancreatic cancers ( 86 ), liver carcinomas ( 87 ). By imposing a redox stress and elevating cellular ROS level, CAP may perturb HIF1α signaling and thus the redox status of transformed cells.…”
