Cointegration and Structure in Norwegian Wage–Price Dynamics

Abstract: Wage coordination plays an important role in macroeconomic stabilization. Pattern wage bargaining systems have been common in Europe, but in different forms, and with different degrees of success in terms of actual coordination reached. We focus on wage formation in Norway, a small open economy, where it is custom to regard the manufacturing industry as the wage leader. We estimate a model of wage formation in manufacturing and in two other sectors. Deciding cointegration rank is an important step in the analy… Show more

“…Thus, understanding inflation and CPI trends will guide decisions aimed at stabilizing prices and promoting economic stability. On the other hand, understanding CPI trends also helps the policy maker in adjusting fair wages that reflect changes in the cost of living (Gjelsvik, Nymoen & Sparrman 2020). Wage adjustments related to inflation is very important to sustain the real purchasing power of employees and strike a balance between economic conditions and business considerations.…”

“…A final set of three papers focuses on applications, (Gjelsvik et al 2020;Goldberg et al 2020;Lütkepohl and Netšunajev 2018). Lütkepohl and Netšunajev (2018) study the relationship between the stock market and monetary policy.…”

“…For this specification, a contractionary monetary policy shock induces long-lasting (albeit long-run neutral) negative effects on production and on the price level. Gjelsvik et al (2020) analyze wage formation in Norway using data from manufacturing, private services and the public sector. They use a partial model of log wages in these three sectors along with the log of the consumer price index, conditionally on a set of other variables.…”

“…Therefore, we first determine the lag length, and second, we need to find the cointegration rank and estimate and interpret the cointegrating relation. Finally, we need to clarify the model by testing coefficients α and β to zero (Gjelsvik et al 2020;Juselius 2009).…”

“…While normality has mainly been neglected in time-series (Juselius 2021), this research tests for (non)normalities and applies them theoretically (Braione and Scholtes 2016;Cheng et al 2021;Desgagné and de Micheaux 2018). Moreover, a robust test is conducted to present this theoretical comparison with VAR modelling using a small open country case study (Gjelsvik et al 2020). The first hypothesis (H1) investigates the eurozone price transmission to the Slovenian price indices in the hospitality industry:…”
