Coinage Metal N‐Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes: Recent Synthetic Strategies and Medicinal Applications

Abstract: New weapons are constantly needed in the fight against cancer. The discovery of cisplatin as an anticancer drug prompted the search for new metal complexes. The successful history of cisplatin motivated chemists to develop a plethora of metal‐based molecules. Among them, metal‐N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes have gained significant attention because of their suitable qualities for efficient drug design. The enhanced applications of coinage metal‐NHC complexes have encouraged a gradually increasing numbe… Show more

“…Since the discovery of the antitumor properties of auranofin, several gold complexes including gold-NHC derivatives have been tested as potential anticancer drug candidates. [27][28][29] However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports addressing the antitumor properties of NHC-gold-amido complexes. Thus, with the aim of investigating the potential anti-…”

“…It is known that the transfer of carbene from silver to copper usually occurs under the the transmetalation conditions [34,87]. However, rare examples of the reverse transmetalation have been reported.…”

“…Therefore, new antitumor drug studies have focused on the design of other metals as well as organic ligands. Metal complexes containing non‐platinum metals (e.g., ruthenium, titanium, gallium, iron, cobalt and gold) were studied in clinical phase or preclinical studies (Achar et al, 2017; Asif et al, 2016; Hackenberg, Lally, et al, 2012; Haque et al, 2018; Nayak & Gaonkar, 2020; Nolan, 2011; Patil, Deally, Gleeson, Hackenberg, et al, 2011; Silver, 2003). Because of the less harmful properties of coinage metals (especially Ag and Au) toward the human body, these metals have been found to be a special key for synthesis of new metallodrugs candidate.…”
