Cohort profile: biological pathways of risk and resilience in Syrian refugee children (BIOPATH)

Abstract: The BIOPATH cohort was established to explore the interplay of psychosocial and biological factors in the development of resilience and mental health problems in Syrian refugee children. Based in Lebanon, a middle-income country significantly impacted by the refugee crisis, it is the first such cohort of refugees in the Middle East. Families were recruited from informal tented settlements in the Beqaa region using purposive cluster sampling. At baseline (October 2017–January 2018), N = 3188 individuals partici… Show more

“…This suggests that the child’s perception of their home environment can influence their academic performance, providing some evidence of plausible future areas for psychological support. The importance of the child’s perception of support has been noted when investigating risk and resilience factors for mental health [ 43 ]. By comparison, there was no association between the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the SAT.…”

“…The number of years of schooling completed by the child is reported by the caregiver, as a key exposure for cognitive function. A short, confidential child questionnaire asks about their perceived level of socioemotional support, which has also been shown to be a key exposure for cognitive function [ 43 ]. Child disability and overall caregiver-reported function are measured using the Washington Group / UNICEF Child Functioning Module [ 44 ].…”

“…Participants came from a cohort of 1591 Syrian refugee child-caregiver dyads recruited from informal tented settlements in the Beqaa region of Lebanon for the Biological Pathways of Risk and Resilience in Syrian Refugee Children (BIOPATH) study [35]. An accelerated longitudinal design was used to collect data from multiple developmental stages over a short period of time given the high mobility of refugee populations.…”

“…Settlements across the Beqa'a region were selected to represent a range of levels of vulnerability, based on UNHCR ratings, and 77 small-medium sized settlements were chosen. All eligible families in these settlements were offered inclusion and the resulting sample size for the original study was n = 1,594 child-caregiver dyads at baseline (McEwen, et al, 2022). A follow-up assessment was conducted 12 months later with n = 1,001 families.…”
