Coherent Interaction of a Single Fermion with a Small Bosonic Field

Abstract: We have experimentally studied few-body impurity systems consisting of a single fermionic atom and a small bosonic field on the sites of an optical lattice. Quantum phase revival spectroscopy has allowed us to accurately measure the absolute strength of Bose-Fermi interactions as a function of the interspecies scattering length. Furthermore, we observe the modification of Bose-Bose interactions that is induced by the interacting fermion. Because of an interference between Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi phase dynamic… Show more

“…For ultracold atomic mixtures, interspecies Feshbach resonances are used in the creation of ultracold polar molecules [3] and are required to observe heteronuclear Efimov trimer states [4]. They also allow the investigation of many interesting many-body phenomena in ultracold mixtures [5][6][7][8]. Since their first observation [9,10], interspecies Feshbach resonances have been studied in many experiments.…”

“…Quantum phase revival spectroscopy, based on the collapse and revival phenomenon, has been used to detect the presence of effective higher-body interactions [4,6]. Here we examine the influence of effective three-body interactions on the Bloch oscillations CR dynamics.…”

“…Furthermore, long coherence times, absence of impurities, and low dissipation make them an ideal system to observe non-equilibrium quantum dynamics [2,3]. One example is the observation of collapse and revival dynamics of bosonic matter wave coherence in a suddenly raised (quenched ) optical lattice [4][5][6]. Another example is the observation of Bloch oscillations, periodic motion in momentum and real space, of ultracold atoms in an accelerating potential [7][8][9].…”

“…Since at these energy scales often all degrees of freedom other than the positions can be ignored, they provide a simple system which still shows a great diversity of phenomena [1,2]. Experimentally, the loading of a small number of fermionic or bosonic atoms into a single trap has been achieved [3], and mixtures have been realized in optical lattice potentials [4]. Also, the strongly correlated low-dimensional Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas has been achieved experimentally, which also requires low densities [5].…”
