Coherent beam combining with an ultrafast multicore Yb-doped fiber amplifier

Abstract: Active coherent beam combination using a 7-non-coupled core, polarization maintaining, air-clad, Yb-doped fiber is demonstrated as a monolithic and compact power-scaling concept for ultrafast fiber lasers. A microlens array matched to the multicore fiber and an active phase controller composed of a spatial light modulator applying a stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm are utilized to perform coherent combining in the tiled aperture geometry. The mitigation of nonlinear effects at a pulse energy of 8… Show more

“…There have been many extra-cavity approaches to improving brightness from laser sources, from the use of fiber lasers [2,3], to coherent beam combining [4][5][6], to semiconductor lasers [7][8][9]. Intra-cavity approaches, however, have seen much interest over a number of years [10][11][12] and are highly attractive for improving laser brightness, as they potentially offer better pump-to-mode overlap, thus enabling higher energy extraction with an improved beam quality at the output.…”

“…Work has already been started on integrating multiple signal cores into a single fiber, as shown in Fig. 8, and first proof-ofprinciple experiments regarding their signal combination have been carried out [52]- [54]. The scaling of the total mode-field diameter (adding all cores) in the same way as for multiple single-core amplifiers is straightforward and will increase the pulse energy and peak power handling capabilities equally.…”

“…Such master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) based configurations might provide significant scope for power scaling of beam-shaped fibre lasers 41 . In addition, CBC from MCF amplifier/lasers has previously been successfully demonstrated as an effective way for power scaling of simple Gaussian beams [42][43][44] .…”
