Cognitive styles in hypomanic episodes of bipolar I disorder

Abstract: Dysfunctional cognition in bipolar disorder seems to relate to state rather than to trait. Hypomania includes depression-related as well as mania-related cognitions and can therefore not be considered as the mere opposite of depression.

“…Similarities between BD and UD in self-esteem or other depression-related traits seem to be especially obvious when implicit measures were used instead of explicit ones (e.g. Lex et al 2011;Lyon et al 1999;Van der Gucht et al 2009). Additionally, remitted patients with BD often only show depression-like cognitions when compared to controls in the implicit assessment of self-esteem (e.g.…”

“…However, the evidence did not support this prediction. This study component was acknowledged as exploratory given the mixed evidence of threat sensitivity in mania (Carver and Johnson 2009;Garcia-Blanco et al 2014) and that existing interpretation bias research has predominantly focused on valence, not threat (e.g., Lex et al 2011;Thomas et al 2009). Consequently, the study results cannot be considered conclusive evidence that mania-consistent processing biases are not induced by manipulated changes in thought speed and variability.…”

“…Following this perspective a role of personality styles [8][9][10][11][12] and cognitive constructs [13][14][15][16] in precipitating depression has been documented in both BD and major depression. Dysfunctional attitudes correlate with a longer duration of depressive episodes [17,18].…”
