“…In the first global model, when combining the significant predictors of each category of variables (adjusted R 2 66%), the largest contribution to the predicted variance was made by the preoperative 6-minute distance (56.6%), followed by knee flexion (4.7%), and then knee pain (4.2%). This result is not surprising since the baseline measure of the dependent variable is usually a strong predictor in regression analyses (6,19,20,22). Although, these proportions of explained variance could be considered optimistic because the development of the model capitalize on chance (138), we demonstrated through internal validation that this model was not overly optimistic.…”

“…Furthermore, we were not surprised to find that the preoperative distance covered during the 6-minute test was the strongest capability predictor. This is because the baseline value of a given measure is often a strong predictor of measures later in time (6,19,20,22). The observation that stride length was retained in the second model might be related to the fact that the 6-minute performance is influenced more by the spatial than the temporal component of gait speed.…”

“…It has long been recognized that pain is a complex sensory and emotional experience (111), and therefore requires consideration of the environmental processes and psychological and social factors that mediate an individual's response if it is to be fully understood (112). A number of studies support the importance of psychological factors in understanding OA pain (113), and it has been reported that pessimism is associated with poor physical outcomes (114).…”
