Cognitive representations in low back pain in patients receiving chiropractic versus physiotherapy treatment

Abstract: This study focused on cognitive representations of low back pain patients receiving chiropractic ( n = 213) versus physiotherapy treatment ( n = 125). Variables assessed included satisfaction with care, illness perceptions, beliefs about pain and medicines, attitudes towards doctors and medicine, suffering, adherence and functional incapacity. In the chiropractic treatment, functional incapacity was predicted by painful symptoms, suffering and personal control, and in the physiotherapy treatment by age, pain i… Show more

“…Post tumor formation, the tumor volume of nude mice was measured every 3 days for 1 week. The longest diameter (a) and the shortest diameter (b) of the tumor were measured with a vernier caliper, and the tumor volume (TV) was calculated: TV = 0.5 × a × b 2 [27]. After the experimental period was 21 days, all nude mice were euthanized.…”

“…The authors identified no phase 3 studies, 9 phase 2 studies, 2,10,12,13,16,27,28,31,51 and 20 phase 1 studies. 4,7,8,9,14,17,18,25,32,37,42,44,45,48,49,50,54,55,56,57 This means for phase 1 studies that illness perceptions, as prognostic factors, were reported without controlling for other prognostic factors. Therefore, the interpretation of reported associations and prognoses should be treated with caution.…”

“…The number of participating patients in studies varied from 11 17 to 2113. 25 Twelve different mus- culoskeletal conditions were identified: (1) rheumatoid arthritis, 18,45,48,50,51,56 (2) LBP, 2,7,12,16,37,49 (3) chronic pain, 14,32,42,44 (4) chronic headache, 4 (5) fibromyalgia, 55,57 (6) systemic lupus erythematosus, 17 (7) hand problems, 26 (8) chronic repetitive strain injuries, 54 (9) acute injury, 8 (10) chronic orofacial pain, 13 (11) gout, 9 and (12) osteoarthritis of the knee. 27 For this study's research questions concerning associations of illness per-ceptions with pain intensity, the authors found 11 cross-sectional studies (APPENDIX A, available at www.jospt.org), and for illness perceptions with physical function, 11 cross-sectional studies (APPENDIX B, available at www.jospt.org).…”

“…The most frequent human musculoskeletal disorder is chronic low back pain (CLBP) that is identified by pain, limitation of hip range of motion 1 , reduced muscle strength of hip abductor/extensors and knee extensors 2 , muscular spasms, and postural disorders 3 . Clinicians tend to focus on the CLBP itself, however, CLBP might cause altered motor control of the lower extremities owing to pain-inhibitory mechanisms 4 6 .…”
