“…The tolerance of healthy term neonates with PKU is usually between 30 and 50 mg/kg, declining later in life to 10–20 mg/kg. In contrast, ELBW neonates with PKU have a much higher phenylalanine tolerance, especially during early postnatal growth with rapid weight gain 5,6 . Our ELBW neonates with PKU showed very high tolerance to phenylalanine (80–110 mg/kg) during rapid weight gain between weeks three and 12 of life.…”

“…With a birth rate around 110,000 neonates per year in our country of 10.5 million inhabitants, and a detection rate of positive neonatal screening for PKU of one per 5500 neonates, the chance of an infant having an ELBW and PKU is 1.7 per million. This explains why clinicians have limited experience of caring for ELBW neonates with PKU 1,5,6 . Untreated PKU can cause severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, attention deficit disorders and behavioural problems that begin in early infancy 6,7 .…”

“…1 Poor motor skills are known to affect participation, and physical and mental well-being. 20 Visual motor integration is dependent on perception and motor skills, but also requires planning and organisation. Each of these skills may function adequately in isolation, but the integration requires a higher level of functioning.…”

“…Phase (4) identifies and delimits the research studies, and presents the narrative in the flowchart in Figure 1 (for presenting phases ( 5) and (6), see Section 2.2). Phase (7) resulted in an earlier initial report from this study [30], which was followed by a discussion with knowledge users (phase (8)). For this rapid review, we use the term "phase" (not steps, as the original research by Khangura et al [25] calls these) to distinguish from the major steps guiding the literature search (last column in Figure 1).…”
