Stress research in youth typically considers either the autonomic nervous system or HPA axis.However, these systems are highly coordinated and physically interconnected. We examined whether the interrelation between cardio-autonomic and HPA axis measures was better associated with perceived stress than their singular associations. Children and adolescents (N = 201) collected saliva samples to measure cortisol (AUC AG , AUC I , maximum), wore an electrocardiogram monitor for 24 h to derive heart rate variability (HRV; LF, HF, LF/HF ratio), and completed the Perceived Stress Scale. The interaction between sympathovagal modulation (LF, LF/HF ratio) and cortisol awakening response (AUC AG , AUC I , maximum) explained significantly greater variance in perceived stress than either stress system alone. Higher sympathovagal modulation combined with higher cortisol awakening response was associated with greater perceived stress. Findings suggest that the inter-relation between cardio-autonomic and HPA axis activity may advance our understanding of how stress impacts health.

Objective: To assess levels of anxiety and salivary alpha-amylase in children and its association with the use of informative or aversive behavioral management techniques during restorative dental procedures. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with 69 children aged 4-12 years submitted to restorative dental treatment. The level of anxiety of patients was verified by means of the Modified Venham Picture Test and levels of salivary alpha-amylase were measured before and after the restorative procedure. The behavioral management techniques used during the dental procedure were registered. Associations between variables were analyzed using the chi-square test, considering statistically significant associations with p ≤ 0.05. Results: Salivary alpha-amylase showed high and moderate levels prior to dental procedure in 47 children (68.1%). Variables gender and behavioral management techniques were not associated with anxiety, as measured by VPT and salivary alphaamylase activity. However, younger children showed higher levels of alpha-amylase (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The sample revealed that the visit to the dentist has generated anxiety, manifested by behavioral and physiological changes, especially in children under 72 months; thus, no association between anxiety and the different management techniques was observed.

ResumenEl Síndrome de Turner corresponde a uno de los trastornos cromosómicos, no heredables, con mayor incidencia poblacional. Las particularidades físicas, neuropsicológicas y psicosociales, relacionadas con la expresión del síndrome, posicionan a las mujeres con este diagnóstico como una población potencialmente vulnerable al estrés. El objetivo del trabajo fue analizar comparativamente dos medidas de estrés en niñas y adolescentes con diagnóstico de Síndrome de Turner, la percepción de estrés a través del Cuestionario para el estrés escolar y la pendiente circadiana de cortisol por determinación de cortisol salival. El análisis de los datos del cuestionario dio cuenta de valores de estrés escolar medios y bajos. Sin embargo, en la totalidad de las participantes se observó alteración de la pendiente de cortisol con valores vespertinos altos, independiente de la etapa de desarrollo puberal, del cariotipo y de los tratamientos hormonales que recibían al momento del estudio. Estos resultados, si bien limitados debido al tamaño de la muestra, podrían relacionarse con la morfología cerebral atípica reportada para esta población en ciertas estructuras corticales y subcorticales. Asimismo, las diferencias encontradas entre las medidas objetiva y subjetiva de estrés podrían deberse a que los altos niveles de cortisol generan difi cultades en procesos cognitivos por lo que la percepción de las señales de alerta se encontrarían disminuidas o anuladas en esta población, restándoles la posibilidad de responder a estímulos potencialmente peligrosos.Palabras clave: Síndrome de Turner, estrés escolar, pendiente circadiana de cortisol Percepção de Estresse Escolar e Ritmo Circadiano de Cortisol na Sindrome de Turner ResumoA Síndrome de Turner é um dos transtornos cromossômicos, não herdáveis, com maior incidência na população.
