Cognitive Impairments in Occupational Burnout – Error Processing and Its Indices of Reactive and Proactive Control

Abstract: The presented study refers to cognitive aspects of burnout as the effects of long-term work-related stress. The purpose of the study was to investigate electrophysiological correlates of burnout to explain the mechanisms of the core burnout symptoms: exhaustion and depersonalization/cynicism. The analyzed errorrelated electrophysiological markers shed light on impaired cognitive mechanisms and the specific changes in information-processing in burnout. In the EEG study design (N = 80), two components of error-r… Show more

“…A deeper insight into possible links between burnout, anxiety and depression comes from psychophysiological research. For example, in a study in which error processing was analyzed, a pattern of anxiety-depression characteristics was observed [9]. Specifically, 2 components of event-related potential (ERP) in error-monitoring revealed similarity to ERPs that were observed in anxiety and depressive disorders.…”

“…The burnout group consisted of participants who had high scores (> 3) in 2 burnout dimensions: exhaustion and cynicism. As diminished efficacy is not so evident in a non-clinical burnout sample [9], efficacy was controlled but was not an inclusion criterion. Areas of Worklife Survey method was used for ensuring the job-related context of burnout symptoms.…”

“…Results from recent physiological and brain-imaging studies into non-clinical burnout are in line with these findings of the involvement of prefrontal cognitive functions. EEG studies indicate impairment in executive functioning in non-clinical burnout (reduced amplitude of the P300), for example, in attention shifting [22,23] and in response inhibition [24]. Clinically, people with such an impairment may be more easily distracted.…”

“…Оскільки скарги на розлади нейропсихологічних функцій уваги та оперативної пам'яті у пацієнтів з ВБН є дуже частими і заважають їх професійній діяльності, ми зосередили увагу на оцінці функцій уваги та опе-ративної пам'яті [3,4].…”
