Cognitive Function in Nigerians with Newly Diagnosed Epilepsy

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Objective:The objective of this study was to evaluate the pattern of cognitive disturbances in Nigerian Africans with newly diagnosed epilepsy, prior to onset of drug therapy. Methods:A total of 60 consecutive patients (mean age 31.6 ± 17.4, range 14 - 55 years) presenting with a clinical diagnosis of epilepsy were recruited for the study. Sixty healthy volunteers without a history of epilepsy and who were age-, sex- and level of education matched with the epileptic patients, were recruited as controls… Show more

“…However, increasing evidence suggests that this is not the case. In some instances, memory impairment is evident at or before the first seizure, suggesting that memory deficits are not merely a side effect of frequent seizures (Pulliainen et al, 2000; Ogunrin et al, 2000). Indeed, an unexpected insight from our data was that protection of both neurons and learning and memory can be achieved without a concomitant decrease in seizure burden.…”

“…A number of studies (Brodie et al., 1987, Smith et al., 1987; Kälviäinen et al., 1992; Helmstaedter et al., 1993; Aikiä et al., 1995; Prevey et al., 1998; Ogunrin et al., 2000; Pulliainen et al., 2000; Aikiä et al., 2001; Kälviäinen et al., 2003; Helmstaedter et al., 2005; Taylor et al., 2010) suggest that people with new‐onset epilepsy are already cognitively compromised at the time of diagnosis before they start treatment and following few seizures. However, there is a question of whether cognitive functioning changes in this group over time has been relatively understudied.…”

“…The patients were diagnosed with either epilepsy or dementia, two neurological disorders, which have been previously shown to be associated with cognitive disturbances. [113] Cognitive assessment was done with the SBT. [21] The test was administered in simple English with instructions given to patients based on each task.…”

“…[123] Therefore medical intervention that can alleviate cognitive disturbances in the affected persons is desirable. Vinpocetine is a derivative of Vincamine, an alkaloid of common periwinkle plant (vinca minor), which has been shown to exert a brain neuro-protective effect by a combined action on cerebral circulation, brain metabolism and rheological properties of the blood.…”
