Disasters can cause trauma to individuals who experience direct events or as witnesses, which is one of the psychological impacts that are often encountered in disaster victims is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Pharmacological therapy in disaster victims with PTSD can be more effective if combined with psychotherapy interventions. One of the psychotherapy therapies that can be done using the CBT method. The goal of CBT is to improve psychosocial function, restore thinking ability, reduce the impact of traumatic events. The aim of this literature review is to determine the effectiveness of the application of CBT to disaster victims with PTSD, by using a database that is used as a search source related to research, namely "ncbi," google scholar ","msjonline.org"," national library ", and "Researchgate". Research data on databases using the keywords "disaster", "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)", "Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)", and "the influence of CBT". The results show that the CBT method used in disaster victims with PTSD is effective in reducing levels of anxiety, discomfort, depression, helplessness, and behavioral problems of various types of measuring instruments and different patient populations. This literature study reports that the positive influence of the CBT method used on disaster victims with PTSD can maintain adaptive coping, improve socialization and train courage of independence. ABSTRAKBencana dapat menyebabkan kejadian trauma pada individu yang mengalami peristiwa langsung ataupun sebagai saksi, yang merupakan salah satu dampak psikologi yang sering dijumpai pada korban bencana adalah post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Terapi farmakologi pada korban bencana dengan PTSD dapat lebih efektif jika di kombinasikan dengan intervensi psikoterapi. Salah satu terapi psikoterapi yang dapat dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode CBT. Tujuan dari CBT adalah meningkatkan fungsi psikososial, mengembalikan kemampuan berpikir, menurunkan dampak dari kejadian traumatic. Tujuan kajian literature ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran efektivitas penerapan CBT pada korban bencana dengan PTSD, dengan menggunakan database yang dijadikan sebagai sumber pencarian yang terkait dengan penelitian yaitu "ncbi:, "google scholar", "msjonline.org", "perpusnas", dan "researchgate". Pencarian data penelitian pada database menggunakan kata kunci " disaster", "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)", "Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)", dan "pengaruh CBT". Hasil menunjukkan bahwa metode CBT yang digunakan pada korban bencana dengan PTSD efektif untuk menurunkan tingkat kecemasan, ketidaknyamanan, depresi, ketidakberdayaan, dan masalah perilaku dari berbagai jenis alat ukur dan populasi pasien yang berbeda. Kajian literature ini melaporkan bahwa pengaruh positif metode CBT yang digunakan pada korban bencana dengan PTSD dapat mempertahankan koping yang adaptif, meningkatkan sosialisasi dan melatih keberanian serta kemandirian.

Objective: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) emerges as the best validated therapeutic approach for children and adolescents who experienced trauma-related symptoms, particularly associated with anxiety or mood disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the CBT efficacy among young people exposed to L’Aquila earthquake, in 2009. Methods: one year after the disaster, 39 young subjects as a case group (CBT treated) and 24 as a comparison group (no CBT treated) were evaluated with the Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R), the General Health Questionnaire-12 items (GHQ-12) and the Brief Cope. CBT was conducted in 12 sessions (once per week for 3 months). After CBT intervention, both groups were evaluated again with the same psychometric instruments.Results: our results show a significantly decrease in post traumatic symptoms and psychological distress severity in CBT group. It was attributable to an improvement in each of three PTSD dimensions (intrusion, avoidance, and arousal) and in the total score of IES-R (p< 0.04). Among CBT treated group, subjects that adopted “planning/problem solving” coping strategies (p < .02) and “religiosity” (p < .045) show higher improvement in psychological distress. Conclusions: our findings show the efficacy of CBT and the influence of individual coping strategies in the improvement of posttraumatic stress symptoms and psychological distress among young people seeking help from an outpatients service for young people with psychiatric problems (the SMILE) after the catastrophic disaster in L’Aquila.

It is established that delayed effective pharmacotherapy plays a significant role in the overall burden of psychiatric disorders, which are often treated with symptomatic drugs, that is benzodiazepines (BZDs), in relation to their rapid onset of action and safety, despite long-term side effects. We aimed to assess the influence of initial treatment with BZDs on the duration of untreated illness (DUI) and whether specific sociodemographic and clinical factors could influence the choice of BZDs as first treatment in 545 patients affected by schizophrenia, mood and anxiety spectrum disorders. Statistical analyses (one-way analysis of variance and χ) were carried out to compare patients who used BZDs as first treatment (BZD w/) and those who did not (BZD w/o). The overall DUI, irrespective of diagnosis, resulted in significantly longer in BZD w/ versus w/o patients, who also experienced more frequently anxious/depressive symptoms at onset. Furthermore, BZD w/ patients more frequently autonomously decided to look for treatment (mainly refering to psychologists or general practitioners) and experimented more frequently phobias, than BZD w/o ones. The present findings suggest that initial BZDs treatment may prolong the overall DUI, although their prescription seems to be influenced by specific sociodemographic and clinical factors. Further studies are needed to confirm the present findings.
