Cognitive Factors Associated with Activities of Daily Living in Post-stroke Patients

Abstract: Abstract.[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive function on Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of post-stroke patients.[Subjects] This study examined 60 stroke patients admitted to a rehabilitation department in Korea between January 2010 and October 2011. All patients were evaluated using the Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment for Geriatric Population (LOTCA-G) upon admission. “…Many studies have been conducted to investigate the factors associated with ADL performance of stroke patients (Kim and Eng 2003;Cho and Lee 2012;Gialanella et al 2012). In people with cognitive impairment, cognitive function cannot be used effectively to perform a meaningful task and is therefore closely related to impairment in ADL performance (Alladi et al 2002).…”

“…In people with cognitive impairment, cognitive function cannot be used effectively to perform a meaningful task and is therefore closely related to impairment in ADL performance (Alladi et al 2002). Many studies reported that cognitive impairment can reduce the independence for performing basic and instrumental ADL (Alladi et al 2002;Cho and Lee 2012). Furthermore, Kim and Eng (2003) reported that the muscle strength of the paretic lower extremity was moderately to highly correlate with ADL performance in stroke patients.…”

“…By 2013, 6.4 million people died of stroke in the developed countries, with the death toll set to rise to around 12 million by 2030, with 70 million stroke survivors by 2030. The impact of stroke is global upon the patient, resulting in increased depression and neurological disorders (Wolfe, 2000), reduced physical activity (Saunders, Sanderson, Bazzelli, Grieg, & Mead, 2013;Smith, Saunders, & Mead 2012) and cognitive impairments that compromise the performance on the everyday tasks of daily living (Cho, & Lee, 2012;Claesson, Lindén, Skoog, & Blomstrand, 2005;Mayo, Wood-Dauphinee, Cote, Durcan, & Carlton, 2002).…”
