Using the ‘polydiagnostic approach’ method, the relationship between basic symptoms (BS) and Bleulerian and Schneiderian types of schizophrenia is studied. Eighty-six schizophrenic patients (RDC criteria) were studied using the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire for the evaluation of the BS. The patients were classified according to the type of symptoms predominant in Schneiderian (n = 32), Bleulerian (n = 12) and mixed (n = 42) schizophrenics. The patients with Schneiderian and mixed schizophrenia displayed more BS than those having Bleulerian schizophrenia. Significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were found on the subscales of Perception (simple), Language, Memory, Motoric and Loss of automatism, in factors 1 2 and 4, and in the total score. The results suggest that, from the perspective of the BS, Schneiderian schizophrenia is different from Bleulerian and that the BS may have the same production mechanisms as Schneider’s FRS, the difference between them being in the different degree of phenomenological expression.

Twenty-eight patients with chronic schizophrenia were evaluated for a variety of psychiatric symptoms. These variables along with demographic data were used to predict relapse over a 24-month period in a multiple regression model. Initial formal thought disorder was a strong predictor of relapse (F = 79; p < 0.001). The predictive value of this symptom was enhanced by the addition of age of onset of psychosis but not by the addition of other symptomatic or demographic variables.

The present paper gives a review of German studies concerning the AMP and AMDP system that have been published since 1983. The test manual to the AMDP-system, published 1983, is complemented herewith. The following topics are discussed: Syndromes/scales on the basis of psychological and somatic outcomes, studies on reliability (especially interrater reliability); capability to differentiate diagnoses; comparison with other assessment instruments, especially biological parameters; results of several diagnoses (schizophrenia, affective disorders, depression etc.); range of application (psychopharmacological studies, diagnostic questions, etc.). The review points out that the AMDP system covers a very wide and elaborate range. Some topics are pointed out that would merit additional study.
