Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies to Increase the Adherence to Exercise in the Management of Obesity

Abstract: Physical activity plays a major role in the development and management of obesity. High levels of physical activity provide an advantage in maintaining energy balance at a healthy weight, but the amount of exercise needed to produce weight loss and weight loss maintenance may be difficult to achieve in obese subjects. Barriers to physical activity may hardly be overcome in individual cases, and group support may make the difference. The key role of cognitive processes in the failure/success of weight managemen… Show more

“…Rehabilitation therapists may be uniquely positioned to help patients early on and throughout the rehabilitation process identify meaningful exercise activities and (re)build their confidence in engaging in purposeful physical activity. Psychologic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy 50 and motivational interviewing 51 have been successfully used to improve exercise self-efficacy and adherence in various populations and may hold substantial promise for people with SCI.…”

“…Studies on the effect of PT as a treatment and not as prevention of metabolic diseases are few [1,18], and are increasingly important because sedentary individuals have lower adherence to regular practice of PT [19] and therefore have a greater chance of developing obesity and other risk factors for MS. Accordingly, our aim in the present study was to determine the benefit of low-to-moderate-intensity PT, during 6 weeks after MS was established; and the association of these PT levels with cardiovascular parameters, oxidative stress and insulin signaling in the liver.…”

“…This adapted interview model is a helpful segue into a collaborative and therapeutic relationship between the provider and patient that allow for meaningful and directed conversations tailored to address physical, psychological, and environmental obstacles that lead to increased adherence to lifestyle modification behaviors. 11,12 Using the 5A's, the provider seeking to narrow the evidence into a realistically implementable and time-efficient model has a tool that is easily adaptable to a comprehensive examination or simplified to meet the time restraints of a focused examination. Guidelines for obesity management in PC can be based on the 5A's and expanded on to assess patient engagement in health maintenance.…”

“…9 Counseling, lifestyle modifications, and behavioral therapy have also been shown to be effective methods in helping patients lose weight. 11,15 Lifestyle modification includes items such as changing eating habits and increasing daily activity levels. Cognitive behavioral therapy can include many interventions such as regular self-weighing, goal setting, selfmonitoring of energy intake and expenditures, reinforcement, and incentives.…”
