Cognition-Oriented Treatments for Older Adults: a Systematic Overview of Systematic Reviews

Abstract: Cognition-oriented treatmentscommonly categorized as cognitive training, cognitive rehabilitation and cognitive stimulationare promising approaches for the prevention of cognitive and functional decline in older adults. We conducted a systematic overview of meta-analyses investigating the efficacy of cognition-oriented treatments on cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes in older adults with or without cognitive impairment. Review quality was assessed by A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR)… Show more

“…This can increase independence in daily-life activities, as our authors analyzed [23]. As a result, this study agrees with previous studies [3,8,23,24], reaffirming that older adults with MCI who participated in these studies were able to improve significantly in general cognition and in specific functions, with language being one of the abilities whose training obtained better results as previously evidenced in another work [3]. The cognitive training program Mente Sana [Healthy Mind] shows that it is effective in the treatment group for this study.…”

“…Moreover, the clinical significance of our results remains a matter of debate, which is not only important in the context of prognostic research for WMT responsiveness, but also regarding general effectiveness of WMT and other CT approaches. 66 Future research on effects and mechanisms of WMT and other CT approaches should more consistently include patient-centered outcomes such as daily life functioning or healthrelated quality of life assessments.…”

“…Cândea et al [21] carried out a review of 32 RCTs of the effect of cognitive intervention on working memory, both in healthy older adults and in older adults with cognitive impairment, finding improvements in the cognitive performance of subjects who had been trained in working memory, without specifying whether this improvement was generalized to overall cognitive functioning. Besides, recent reviews [14,22,23] report scientific evidence for cognitive interventions since engaging in cognitively stimulating activities can be protective for age-related cognitive decline and dementia possibly by increasing cognitive reserve and resilience in later life [14,22,23].…”
