Objective: to describe the sociodemographic characteristics associated with depressive symptoms in hospitalized elderly. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out in a public teaching hospital. The sample was composed of 96 individuals aged ≥60 years, hospitalized in a clinical and surgical unit. The data collection was performed through a semi-structured interview with the instrument Geriatric Depression Scale. The variables were described through frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. The Fisher's exact test was used to assess the association with depressive symptoms. Results: a total of 45.8% of the elderly presented mild to moderate depressive symptoms and 1.0% had severe symptoms. There was a predominance of women, between 60 and 79 years old, living with a partner, with low level of education (one to seven years of schooling), Catholics, retirees or pensioners, and with a family income of up to three minimum wages. Conclusion: the labor situation presented a statistically significant association with depressive symptoms in the hospitalized elderly. Descriptors: Depression; Aged; Hospitals, General.Objetivo: descrever as características sociodemográficas associadas a sintomas depressivos em idosos hospitalizados. Métodos: estudo transversal realizado em hospital público de ensino. Amostra de 96 indivíduos com idade ≥60 anos, internados em unidade clínica e cirúrgica. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com o instrumento Geriatric Depression Scale. As variáveis foram descritas por frequências, porcentagem, média e desvio padrão. Para avaliar a associação com os sintomas depressivos foi utilizado o teste Exato de Fisher. Resultados: 45,8% dos idosos apresentaram sintomas depressivos leves a moderados e 1,0% sintomas graves. Houve predominância de mulheres, idade entre 60 e 79 anos, com companheiro, baixa escolaridade (um a sete anos de estudo), religião católica, aposentados ou pensionistas e renda familiar de até três salários mínimos. Conclusão: a situação trabalhista apresentou associação estatisticamente significante com sintomas depressivos em idosos hospitalizados.

Cognitive and functional assessment about elderly people users of health public service

Objective: To evaluate the functional capacity, cognition and mood in three different care models for older adults. Method: A cross-sectional study conducted in 2014 with 140 older adults (37 institutionalized, 53 hospitalized and 50 outpatients). The MMSE, Clock Drawing Test (CDT), Activities of Daily Living Scale -ADLs (Katz, Lawton) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were applied. Results: Of those institutionalized, the majority were totally dependent for ADLs and 100% presented cognitive decline. Of those hospitalized and the outpatients, the majority were independent for ADLs, with 62.3% and 48.0% presenting cognitive decline, respectively. The minority presented depressive symptoms. The results indicated that age was a predictor of cognitive decline and the likelihood of prevalence in hospitalized and outpatient older adults increased by 8.7% for each year of life. Conclusion: It is important to pay attention to the cognitive and functional performance of older adults with the aim of preventing their decline, which is so frequent in the public health services in Brazil.Keywords: Older adult; Daily Activities; Cognition. resumen Objetivo: Evaluar la capacidad funcional, cognitiva y el estado de ánimo en tres modelos diferentes de la atención a las personas mayores. Método: Estudio transversal comparativo realizado en el año 2014 con 140 ancianos (37 institucionalizados, 53 hospitalizados y 50 ambulatorios). Aplicado el MMSE, test del reloj, Actividades de la Vida Diaria Escala (Katz, Lawton) y Escala de Depresión Geriátrica. Resultados: El institucionalizada, la mayoría totalmente dependiente para ADL y el 100% tenían deterioro cognitivo. En hospitales y clínicas, muchos independiente para ADL, con el 62,3% y el 48% con el deterioro cognitivo, respectivamente, la minoría tenía síntomas depresivos. Los resultados indicaron que la edad es un predictor de deterioro cognitivo y las posibilidades de prevalencia en hospitalizados y ambulatorios ancianos aumento del 8,7% por cada año de vida. Conclusión: Cabe destacar la importancia de dar atención al rendimiento cognitivo y funcional de las personas mayores a la prevención disminución de éstos, tan frecuentes en los servicios de salud pública en Brasil.

Objective: to describe the mental health profile of the elderly registered in a Family Health Unit in the city of Recife, Pernambuco State. Method: it was a descriptive quantitative study, conducted with 159 elderly through the scales Geriatric Depression, Resilience, Social Support, Life Satisfaction, and Positive and Negative Affects, Mini-Mental State Examination, Stressful Events Inventory and Brazil Old Age Shedule. Results: females, young and literate elderly predominated. Most were satisfied with life, 52.2% without depressive symptoms, 68.6% without cognitive impairment, 67.9% high resilience and 95.8% high social support, but 62% of elderly with depressive symptoms showed cognitive deficit. Negative correlation was identified between depression and cognitive impairment, resilience, social support and life satisfaction. Conclusion: assessment of these indicators identifies triggers of psychological distress, assisting the nursing staff in the development of preventive and care actions.
