Coffee leaf miner resistance

Abstract: The coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella, is a common pest of coffee plantations in Brazil. Though it is effective, chemical control substantially increases the cost of production and constitutes a significant risk for the environment. Resistant coffee cultivars have been and continue being developed through classic and molecular selection techniques. Basic knowledge about the biology of this insect, the damage it causes to the plants, the identification of sources of resistance, the development of efficien… Show more

“…This is favorable to coffee vegetative growth due to the consecutive emission of new leaves (Blanco et al, 2003;Conceição et al, 2005). The first new leaf pairs sprouted by the plant are usually not used by L. coffeella females for oviposition and, when they are used, there is an increase in larval mortality and a decrease in egg hatching, which reduces adult fertility (Guerreiro Filho, 2006). Plant density only had significant effects in the months of increased pest occurrence.…”

“…Thus, great effort has continuously been made to improve the efficiency of the Brazilian coffee production sector, especially by solving phytosanitary problems caused by pests like the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville, 1842) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). 1 Adult females of this insect deposit their eggs on the adaxial leaf surface. After the embryonic stage (4-6 days), larvae hatch out and penetrate into the leaves to feed on their mesophyllic tissues.…”

“…Resistant coffee plants have been obtained through the transfer of resistance genes from C. racemosa to the susceptible C. arabica cultivars (Guerreiro-Filho 2006). However, homogeneous and stable populations, sexually propagated, have not been obtained yet, suggesting that resistance inheritance is more complex than the control by two dominant and complementary genes (Guerreiro-Filho et al 1999).…”
