Coffee consumption and the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults—results from a Swedish case–control study

Abstract: Our findings confirm that coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, the findings suggest that coffee may be associated with development of autoimmunity and possibly an increased risk of more Type 1-like latent autoimmune diabetes in adults.

“…The suggested positive association between artificially sweetened beverages and diabetes risk remains to be further explored. This study supports the notion that dietary factors may influence LADA development (21,40,41). This is important as the identification of modifiable risk factors could aid in preventing autoimmune diabetes.…”

“…The details of ESTRID have been described previously [14]. In short, ESTRID was initiated in 2010, recruiting incident cases of diabetes through diabetes registries in the Swedish counties of Skåne (All New Diabetics in Skåne [ANDIS], http://andis.…”

“…The ESTRID data collection has been described in detail elsewhere. 15 In short, incident cases of diabetes were identified continuously using two population-based diabetes registries in Sweden (ANDIS; All New Diabetics in Scania http://andis.ludc.med.lu.se/, and ANDiU; All New Diabetics in Uppsala http://www.andiu.se/), aimed at characterizing all new diabetes cases with regard to clinical and genetic factors. To ESTRID we invited all new cases of LADA identified in Skåne (from 2010 onwards) and Uppsala (from 2012 onwards) together with a random sample of patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (four per LADA case).…”
