Cofactors and comorbidities of necrobiosis lipoidica: analysis of the German DRG data from 2012

Abstract: Our data analysis describes one of the largest compilations of patient cases with the diagnosis of NL worldwide. Besides the well-known association with diabetes mellitus, there are numerous other potentially relevant cofactors and comorbidities that should be considered in the diagnosis and management of NL patients.

“…Necrobiosis lipoidica is a chronic granulomatous dermatitis, and the peak age for presentation has been reported to be in the third and fourth decades . It is very rare in the pediatric population, and only a few isolated cases have been reported in individuals below the age of 10 years, all of which were patients with diabetes . The sex distribution of cohort studies showed a woman predominance .…”

“…Histologically, it is characterized by collagen degeneration, granuloma formation, and endothelial swelling. First described by Oppenheim in 1929 [ 1 ] , various studies have shown the prevalence of diabetes -at the time of NL diagnosis -to be somewhere between 30 % and 60 % [ 2 ] . Conversely, only approximately 3 % of diabetics develop NL over the course of their disease.…”
