Coexisting leiomyomata peritonealis disseminata and ovarian leiomyoma

Abstract: Leiomyoma is the most common tumor seen affecting women mostly of reproductive age groups. It is composed of smooth muscle cells that are positive for smooth muscle actin on immunohistochemistry. Leiomyomata peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is characterized by nodules that stud the peritoneum. It is seen in association with hormone-producing ovarian tumors and coexisting leiomyomas of the uterus. Association with mesenteric leiomyomas has been reported. Ovarian leiomyomas are very rare tumors of the ovary and co… Show more

“…It was difficult to identify this tumor from ovarian thecoma and ovarian fibroma, which was determined by immunohistochemistry. [ 5 , 7 ] Immunohistochemistry can reveal positive results for vimentin, desmin, and smooth muscle actin. [ 15 ] In order to distinguish this tumor from ovarian sex cord stromal tumors, the combined staining of SMA, desmin and α-inhibin should be performed.…”

“…Furthermore, patients are often complicated with a history of hysteromyoma or hysterectomy, [ 4 ] and coexisting peritoneal disseminated leiomyoma and ovarian leiomyoma have also been reported. [ 5 ] The histology of leiomyomas ranges from benign to borderline to malignant. In most reports on this type of tumor, ovarian myoma has a benign histology.…”

“…Furthermore, LPD has been associated with the presence of both ascites and endometriosis [17] or both ascites and lymph nodes enlargement [16] . Finally, the first case of LPD and ovarian leiomyoma, which is a scarce tumor, has been recently documented [18] .…”

“…1 En raras ocasiones los síntomas de malignidad, como ascitis e inflamación de los ganglios linfáticos, pueden aparecer al momento del diagnóstico. 9 Se ha asociado con endometriosis; 13 se ha documentado relación de la leiomiomatosis peritoneal diseminada con otros tipos de tumores benignos y malignos, como el caso del leiomioma ovárico 14 o como en nuestra paciente que cursó con carcinoma ductal infiltrante, con metástasis al hueso.…”
