Coexistence of thyroid autoimmunity with other autoimmune diseases: Friend or foe? Additional aspects on the mosaic of autoimmunity

Abstract: Autoimmunity encompasses a wide spectrum of diseases from organ-specific diseases like Hashimoto thyroiditis, to systemic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. These diseases are characterized by inflammation and the production of a wide range of autoantibodies directed against multiple autoantigens. Although their etiology is still poorly understood, genetic, immunological, hormonal, and environmental factors are major predisposing and triggering factors. These multiple factors, like pieces in a mosa… Show more

“…Lichen planus has been associated to a number of disorders, generally of autoimmune origin: myasthenia gravis, Sjogren's syndrome, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, thymoma, lupus erythematous, coeliac disease [1]. Likewise, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus erythematous, type 1 diabetes, pernicious anaemia, surrenal deficiency and Grave's disease were considered as HTassociated disorders [2]. To the best of our knowledge, no one reported so far the association between OLP and HT.…”

“…Since thyroid disease represents a prevalence of 14% to 20% in women who have SLE and Sjogren syndrome [52], assessment of sick infants who have NLS should include evaluation for thyroid dysfunction and maternally derived blocking and stimulating thyroid antibodies. Women who have hypothyroidism and SSA/Ro antibodies have a nine fold increased risk for delivering a child who has CHB compared with women who have only SSA/Ro antibodies [53].…”

“…17 Autoimmune thyroiditis has been linked to infections with EBV, HTLV-1, hepatitis C virus, and Yersinia enterocolitica. 5 Specific infections were suggested to be a triggering factor for the initiation of disease by liberating antigens (via cell destruction or apoptosis), by forming altered antigens or causing molecular mimicry, by cytokine and chemokine secretion, and by inducing aberrant HLA-DR expression and Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) activation.…”
