Coexistence of supply chains in a city’s food supply: a factor for resilience?

Abstract: The objective of this article is to propose and test an approach to characterise a city's supply system and analyse its resilience. Anchored in economic and network sociology, the approach has been enriched by contributions from management sciences and geomatics, which have made it possible to conceptualise a city's supply system as a network that is both social and spatialised, structured by operators and circulating differentiated products. Tested in the city of Montpellier, a signatory of the Milan Pact, th… Show more

“…In the earlier FP7 FOODLINKS project, the resilience of SFSCs was highlighted as a key factor to be used in policy changes-SFSCs can complement long chains, thus diversifying the sources of food supply [13]. More research is, however, needed to qualify and quantify the concrete economic, social and spatialized flows in each type of chain, including their importance and vulnerabilities, in order to guide decision-makers [147]. Another new direction of research, initiated in the FP7 FOODMETRES project, consists of assessing the foodshed of cities and testing diverse scenarios to increase self-sufficiency in relation to possible evolutions in diets, population, etc.…”

“…The authors test this approach for the French city of Montpellier and its neighbouring areas, mainly for the tomato. They show that the complementarity between short and long supply chains and the articulation of three spatialized markets favours the resilience of the city's supply (Chiffoleau et al 2020).…”

“…Indeed, research conducted in Africa [27] and in Europe [28,29] determined the main characteristics for effective food system resilience. These were: energy and nutrient sovereignty, transparency and dialogue in the food chain, continuous innovativeness and evidence-based learning, proximities of stakeholders in the short chain….…”
