Coexistence of Sea Urchins in Seagreas Meadows: An Experimental Analysis of Competition and Predation

Abstract: An experimental examination at two sites of the effects of competition and predation on Tripneustes ventricosus and Lytechinus variegatus, the common sea urchins in meadows of the Caribbean seagrass, Thalassia testuinum, suggests that intraspecific competition and predation on recruits influence their population dynamics. Grazing by Tripneustes strongly influenced the biomass of Thalassia. Density—dependent mortality caused the number of caged Tripneustes to converge on naturally occurring densities (about 1 u… Show more

“…along the major northern coastal area) A. lixula were found down to 9 m, suggesting that their restricted distribution might also be mediated by competition with D. antillarum. Shulman (1990) recorded similar observations with the D. antillarum and Keller (1983) with other sea urchin species in the Caribbean reefs.…”

“…However, this should not influence our results, since changes to the variables assessed usually occur in much shorter times (e.g. after 1.5-3 months; Keller, 1983;2 months;Andrew, 1986, and 6 months; Levitan, 1989). Therefore, we assume that the experimental period of more than one year is long enough for any effect to be established, and as the experiments ended at the same time (October 2001), we compared the sea urchin variables at this point in time.…”

“…Only Keller (1984) presented experimental evidence for density-dependent mortality, in the tropical echinoids Tripneustes ventricosus and Lytechinus variegatus. In the latter species little mortality occurred until densities reached 16 times their natural levels.…”
