Coercitio

Abstract: Coercitio was the authority vested in Roman magistrates to compel obedience from their fellow citizens. Magistrates invested with coercitio were able to enforce statutes, edicts, and official commands by imposing summary penalties for non‐compliance, and in this way coercitio provided the fundamental compulsory aspect in Rome's legal system.
