This study aimed at describing the phytoplankton dynamics and structure in a shallow eutrophic reservoir, the Garças Pond, located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (23°38 0 40.6 00 S, 46°37 0 28.0 00 W), in the Municipality of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. Samples were collected monthly from January to December 1997 in five depths (subsurface, 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, and 20 cm above the bottom) in the pelagic zone (Z max = 4.7 m). Abiotic variables studied were: water temperature, turbidity, transparency, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, inorganic carbon, and N and P dissolved and total forms. Altogether 236 phytoplankton taxa distributed among 10 classes were identified. Phytoplankton seasonal and vertical variation was related to shifts in the water chemical features as a consequence of a warm-wet season with stratified water column (phase 1, January-March and SeptemberDecember) alternating with a cool-dry season with mixed water column (phase 2, April-August). There were shifts in cyanobacterial dominance over the entire year. During phase 1, Raphidiopsis/Cylindrospermopsis was one of the most important taxon. During phase 2, Raphidiopsis/Cylindrospermopsis biomass decreased, whereas richness and diversity increased and diatoms were relatively abundant. In September, when the water column was markedly stratified, a cyanobacterial bloom (Sphaerocavum brasiliense) occurred. Changes in water chemical variables caused by the bloom allowed recognition of a phase 3, in which pH and chlorophyll a, TP and CO 3 2-concentration reached their highest values. According to Reynolds and collaborators' functional groups approach, phase 1 was marked by groups S/ W1/W2/H1/Y, phase 2 by groups K/L M /L O /D/P/X1/ F, and phase 3 by group M. This sequence was corroborated by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) results.

Cyanobacteria from a Brazilian subtropical freshwater water body

Due to the undeniable importance of the role that cyanobacteria play in different ecosystems, and the new discoveries and periodic changes in their taxonomic classification, the main objective of this research was a taxonomic update of the cyanobacteria recorded in an artificial, subtropical freshwater water body. This work also aimed at the knowledge of the geographic distribution and frequency of the species throughout the study period. The analyzed pond (called Basin 7) is located in an environmental preservation area called Braskem Environmental Station (29°51 0 57.3 00 S and 51°21 0 54.7 00 W), which is part of the ''green belt'' that surrounds the set of companies of the Southern Petrochemical Complex of Rio Grande do Sul state (Brazil). The studied samples were taken from May 2000 to December 2015, using a plankton net (30 lm), and floating thallus of cyanobacteria were collected directly by hand. Thirty-three species were identified and distributed in the orders Oscillatoriales (14), Synechococcales (12), Chroococcales (6) and Spirulinales (1). Phormidium Kützing ex Gomont presented the highest species richness, with five species identified, and P. tergestinum (Kützing) Anagnostidis & Komárek was the one with the highest frequency of occurrence (81.3%). Among the identified species, seven are especially important for being potentially toxic. Eucapsis pseudalpina Komárek & Hindák also stood out for its first recorded occurrence in Brazil, and Ancylothrix rivularis Martins & Branco, Arthrospira jenneri Stizenberger ex Gomont and Pannus cf. brasiliensis Malone et al. for their first recorded occurrence in Rio Grande do Sul state. For each species, diagnoses, basionyms and synonyms when appropriate, illustrations and comments are presented.

Based on the literature about the cyanobacteria from Brazil and particularly from São Paulo State, the list of Brazilian flora and the data bank of herbaria collections, a total of 460 species were referred to Brazil and 378 to São Paulo State. Taking into account that the group of cyanobacteria presents around 2800 species, these numbers represent much less than 20% of the known species. Considering the diversity of environments and habitats in the tropical/subtropical biomes compared to the reduced number of known species, this biodiversity is certainly underestimated and should be much larger.
