Coding Schemes for the Analysis of Ict Supported Co-Creative Design Sessions

Abstract: The paper presents a coding scheme for design protocol analysis of collaborative sessions supported by Augmented Reality. It maps verbal interactions during creative sessions, so as to distinguish codesigners' intentions and the related contents characterizing the characteristics of the design proposal in terms of items and related parameters. Three different co-creative sessions and a tailored metrics allowed for checking the coding scheme effectiveness, showing good mapping capabilities and versatility of ap… Show more

“…Researchers working on design cognition use various methods to explore the cognitive processes of designers and end users. These methods include protocol analysis (Erickson and Simon, 1980), think-aloud approaches (Gero and Maher, 1997), real-world observation (Becattini et al, 2017), or controlled laboratory observation (O'Hare et al, 2018) (Masclet et al, 2021), and more recently, new tools for measuring the physiological and neuropsychological states of designers such as EAD, EEG, ECG, fMRI or NIRS have been investigated (Hay et al, 2019;Gero and Milovanovic, 2020).…”

“…However, there has apparently been a gap in studies across the topics of creativity and collaborative design environments. There are several studies which focus on digital media and collaborative design, for example, examining the potentials of new collaborative interfaces such as tangible user interface (TUI) [84], stationary AR [85,86], mobile AR [87], and VR [88] using PA. There are also studies on collaborative design and related creativity concepts [89][90][91] although without a computational focus.…”

“…A supporting tool based on projected mock-ups to render an infinite range of real-like products can be easily integrated within the design process for exploring all the desired alternatives starting from a single physical model (Verlinden & Horváth, 2009). This real-time rendering is fundamental in the whole development process even if the greatest impact is during the early phases, where rapid and various changes are applied on the product appearance (Becattini et al, 2018). Thanks to the adoption of projector devices, 90 whose light beams are directed onto the external surface of white physical prototypes, there are no external means of visualization that can interfere with the user's view, such as head mounted displays or handheld devices.…”
