One of the most widely used and controversial qualitative research methods among researchers is Grounded Theory (GT). Although the basic concepts of GT are widely known by qualitative researchers, the practical application of the method is not always clear, and sometimes we encounter contradictions and uncertainties. The objective of this article is to provide a data analysis strategy based on GT. It is hoped that this knowledge will provide an aid or resource for both novice and experienced educational technology researchers. To this end, a conceptual overview of the field and the methodological route are presented. A broad and updated theoretical base is used to describe the conceptual and structural aspects of GT, to describe steps to follow when applying it, and to highlight the use of analytical tools that help the researcher make decisions and implement GT.

Maslow’s theory for preventive healthcare in India – a content analysis approach

Purpose The purpose of the study was to apply Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to understand consumer motivation for preventive health care in India using content analysis. Design/methodology/approach Content analysis approach which is a qualitative-based approach was adopted. The responses were collected through semi-structured interviews using purposeful sampling method, and the responses were analyzed using content analysis approach. Sub themes and main themes were derived from the data which related to concepts in Maslow’s theory. Findings The results indicate the following: healthy food, healthy diet and health supplements are the basic need; sustainability of health and fitness and health security relate to safety and security need; feeling of pride in being fit, being a role model of fitness for others and influence of electronic media relate to social and self-esteem need; freedom from disease and peace of mind fulfill the need for self-actualization. Research limitations/implications To strengthen the external validity, a mix of alternate research methodologies adopting qualitative and quantitative approach need to be adopted. Practical implications This study will help to better understand motivation for preventive health care. It will enable health-care companies to design health-care marketing programs based on Maslow’s theory to motivate individuals to purchase health products. The public health-care departments can issue guidelines based on Maslow’s theory to motivate citizens toward preventive health care. Originality/value Maslow’s theory was applied in the context of preventive health care.

Antimicrobial Resistance Policy Protagonists and Processes—A Qualitative Study of Policy Advocacy and Implementation

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) fundamentally weakens societal foundations economically and in health care. The development of well-considered policies against AMR is important. However, in many places, AMR policy implementation remains elusive. This study aims to identify enablers and deterrents as well as processes and conditions in AMR policy advocacy. It also aims to identify AMR implementation conditions where AMR national policies are adopted and, to a certain extent, formulated and implemented. This study adopts qualitative research methodology and applies the Grounded Theory Framework to identify thematic findings from interviews conducted in China, Japan, Norway, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States of America (US). It was identified that AMR policy protagonists are critical to filtering AMR issues and identifying policies “fit to prioritize” and “fit to implement”. They have helped move policy prioritization needles in the UK and the US and engaged in diplomatic efforts in the UK. In these cases, no clientelism was considered. In the US, protagonists who talked to the right decision-makers in the right office at the right time both moved AMR issues from individuals to institutional agenda and from social norms to policy agenda. To conclude, there are three thematic policy conditions that are significant to AMR policy advocacy and implementation: committed personal championship, institutionalization of policies, and social norms facilitate AMR policy advocacy and implementation.
